The wereque, or also known as wereke, is a plant of Mexican origin, which is a cucurbit of Sonoran origin. It grows like a vine with small yellow flowers and red fruits when ripe. This type of vine climbs around the trees, reaching a height of three meters. The root or tuber is the medicinal part of this plant, which has the measurements of a jicama or beetroot. It is characterized by its great bitter taste, its large size and its grayish color. Like thousands of other medicinal plants, this plant has a long tradition that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. The Yaqui, Maya and Opata peoples have traditionally used it in their herbal practices.
